During the late Qing Dynasty, high-end restaurants in Beijing would always prepare one or two pills of Niuhuang Qingxin Wan at banquets to relieve intoxication, reduce internal heat, resolve phlegm and dispel wind. As a luxury item, Niuhuang Qingxin Wan cost more than two silver dollars per pill and was often in short supply. Major restaurants also sold top-quality Niuhuang Qingxin Wan on a consignment basis.
This time-honored and highly effective prescription has successfully attracted attention in Japan and South Korea.
In Japan, calculus bovis (niuhuang) is regarded as a star traditional Chinese medicinal material. As early as the 1980s, President Mizuno of Japan’s Anjuyuan Co., Ltd. developed a special fondness for China’s Niuhuang Qingxin Wan and visited China 17 times to negotiate cooperation. After six years of efforts, Niuhuang Qingxin Wan finally passed the rigorous review of Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, becoming one of the few traditional Chinese medicines officially registered as pharmaceuticals in Japan. Since then, Japanese manufacturers have ordered hundreds of thousands of Niuhuang Qingxin Wan pills annually.
Japanese research institutions have confirmed that the therapeutic applications of Niuhuang Qingxin Wan extend beyond the indications listed in its instructions, and it also shows favorable effects in promoting human microcirculation.
